The festive event of July 26 has undergone several denominations and definitions: Maritime Festival, Feast of Sant’anna, feast of boats decorated, Sagra del Mare, Festa a mare AI scogli di Sant’anna, parade of allegorical boats, Sagra AI scogli di Sant’anna and recently even Midsummer Water Carnival, defile on the waves, Festa modellata sul Carnevale di Viareggio, parade of boats decorated in masks. The definition of Feast at sea comes from previous propitiatory rites that were given as deadlines of Natural Cycles. This strongly rooted tradition was superimposed on the Catholic anniversary of St. Anne, protector of the parturients. Originally the festival consisted in setting fire to numerous bonfires that were lit at dusk. The wood was accumulated throughout the year and the ignition signal started from Epomeo, then they were lit on Soronzano, Cilento, Campagnano and surroundings and finally at the Old Cemetery. In addition to the fires there were swimming competitions and rowing competitions.
